The advantage of clear ice is that it doesn't absorb fridge odours as much as cloudy tap water ice, due to the lack of air bubbles and impurities. However, there are things you can do to make sure no nasty smells are transferred into your dram of whisky.
What temperature should clear ice be stored in?
Clear ice should be stored just like any other ice cubes, at -18°C. We deliver our clear ice cubes and ice balls in temperature controlled packaging using dry ice packs that keep the ice frozen for 24 hours from the moment they leave our factory. That means that the ice is delivered to you in a frozen condition, but should be stored in the freezer immediately upon delivery.
How long can clear ice last in the fridge-freezer?
The shelf life of our ice is 2 years. The best before date is always provided on the packaging, and it is always minimum 12 months from the purchase date.
However, there are things you can do to improve the condition of the ice if you are storing it for a long time.
Top 3 tips for storing clear ice:
1) If you plan to store the ice cubes for a long time, move them from their recyclable paper boxes to sealed bags or containers. This will keep the ice from absorbing fridge odours.
2) Keep ice in a separate drawer than food. Seal all the food you store in the fridge freezer!
3) Never re-freeze melted ice cubes. It is not food safe as ice might pick up dangerous bacteria from surfaces, hands, or utensils.
