It's no secret that most of us love a G&T, especially on a hot summer day. It's a quintessentially British classic that's easy to make at home, and usually a safe choice to order at any bar. But if you have a special occasion coming up, you can upgrade this classic drink with luxury ice to take it to the next level - while still keeping it simple.
Simplicity and luxury in a glass
You don't need flavoured gins or fancy garnishes to make the perfect Gin and Tonic. In fact, this drinks calls for simplicity and is best enjoyed in its classic form. What you do need to remember is to use the highest quality ingredients. This will ensure that you'll enjoy every sip of this classic highball cocktail.
Step 1: Choose the right glassware
Gin and Tonic is best enjoyed as a long drink in a highball glass. If you want to add a bit of character to your G&T but don't want to add any fancy garnishes, why not use a colourful crystal glass? We love to have our Gin and Tonic in the Swirl higball glass in light blue from our friends at Sipped Ltd.
Step 2: Fill the glass with clear ice
Now that you've prepared your highball glass, it's time to choose the right type of ice. To make the perfect G&T, use clear ice that's supersized and slow melting. This way you will slow down the dilution and get the most flavour from your gin. For highball glasses, use the High Cubes, sometimes called Collins cubes, ice spears, or ice pillars. Our High Cubes are 11cm tall which means they fit in majority of highball glasses. A glass filled with one long clear ice cube looks so much more elegant than multiple small cubes - and it melts at a much slower rate too.
Step 3: Use premium spirits and mixers
There are so many fine gins distilled in the UK, and the choice has never been harder. Our advice is to test as much as you can to find your match made in heaven. Why not go to a gin festival to sample the flavours you've never tried before?
Our recent discovery that we've used for the recipe below is the multi award winning Horse Guards London Dry Gin by Innovatus Drinks. A London dry gin made using a combination of juniper berries, coriander seeds, cardamon, angelica root and hints of citrus. This unique blend of quintessential ingredients makes for a smooth sumptuous taste that will truly will engage your taste buds.
Remember to match it with a premium tonic water that suits your chosen gin. We think that the Fever Tree Light Tonic Water goes best with juniper-forward and London Dry gins like the Horse Guards by Innovatus Drinks as it brings forward the gin's intense flavours and botanicals.
Step 4: Add that hint of citrus
Gin and Tonic is usually enjoyed garnished with a slice of lemon or lime. However, if you prefer your G&T to have more dry, intense flavour, use a dash of citrus juice instead of placing the citrus wedge inside the drink. The lemon or lime placed in a drink often have a zesty, bitter flavour after a while, while using just a splash of juice will guarantee you're using the amount of citrus you want.
The Perfect G&T
By choosing premium, finest quality ingredients, you can be sure to make the best out of your Gin and Tonic, while still keeping it simple and classic. You can enjoy the G&T on a High Cube clear ice cube for a long time without it going watery, or you can even top it up a few times while still using the same ice cube.
Ingredients
1 part Horse Guards London Dry Gin
2-3 parts Fever Tree Light Tonic
High Cube - clear ice cube from Ice Club's Diamond Collection
a dash of lime or lemon juice
Method
Place a High Cube in a highball glass and let it sit for 5-10 minutes to prevent internal cracking of the cube.
